Berry Bowls with Granola

A few months ago, we visited a small juice/smoothie bar in San Diego and enjoyed a “Berry Bowl” for breakfast. We came home and I attempted to reproduce it because it was so delicious. I make these about once a week and usually receive cheers and applause when I announce the breakfast menu.

The original had acaí berries as the smoothie base. I have used our normal smoothie mixture (banana, mixed berries, a handful of spinach, ground flaxseed), keeping it as thick as possible so that it can be eaten with a spoon.

We top it with hemp granola (though I’m sure oat-based granola would work as well), a sprinkle of coconut, and some cut fresh fruit. That’s it! Easy, healthy breakfast that will make everyone smile!

    Yum! Thanks for sharing! We do homemade yogurt and granola a couple of times a week, but I never would’ve thought to replace the plain yogurt with a smoothie. I haven’t put flax meal in our smoothies either…I’ll have to give that a try as well.

  2. Yeah! I’m not the only one that puts spinach in smoothies! Many mornings, I enjoy making a hearty/healthy and possibly delicious smoothie. It consists of ground almonds, plain yogurt, flaxmeal, spinach, carrots, apples or pears, bananas, strawberries (if their on hand), prunes, and ice. Everybody here has acquired the taste and loves them. It’s a great way to begin our day.

      Spinach in the smoothie is one of my best tricks for getting the kids to eat healthy things! They like salad, but they beg for more smoothies. We usually do more of a fruit-based smoothie for breakfast and then often make some green veggie juice after dinner.
